China Pledges Further $ 200M In Flood Aid:BEIJING: China is to give another $ 200 million in flood relief in Pakistan, Prime Minister Wen Jiabao announced during his visit to New York for UN summit to combat poverty.
The announcement was made one month after the Beijing faced sharp criticism of its promises of liberation from Pointman Washington on Pakistan, Richard Holbrooke, who called for a close ally of Islamabad to “step up to the plate” and do more to help.
“I would like to take this opportunity to announce that China will, on top of pledged assistance to provide another $ 200 million assistance to Pakistan,” Wen said. China has previously offered about $ 47 million in aid to Pakistan following the devastating floods, which the UN agency said affected 21 million people and killed 12 million require emergency food aid.
Torrential rains began falling in northern Pakistan in July and floods since then slowly south, destroying villages and fields, and affecting the area about the size of England. This summer, China itself was fighting the worst floods in more than a decade, which left thousands dead or missing.
