Updates:Stephen Colbert:Feel the news along with Stephen Colbert, America’s ballsiest pundit, with highlights and full episodes of The Colbert Report.Congress is usually not a barrel of laughs, especially when lawmakers are discussing illegal immigration and the plight of migrant farm workers. But within a few minutes on Friday, wonkish House subcommittee room turned into a Comedy Club, thanks to San Jose Republic Zoe Lofgren and comedian Stephen Colbert.
Lofgren, a Democrat who heads the Subcommittee on Immigration House, invited Colbert to “testify” to a rumor on the plight of migrant farm workers. The appearance before the flood of cameras and reporters came after the two had attended a recent (if that word) in the United farm workers’ Take our jobs “campaign, challenging Americans to try to hard manual labor migrant farm workers.
Colbert, who plays the arch-conservative TV host on his Comedy Central show “The Colbert Report”, not to deviate from the character. He has openly said that “I certainly hope that my star power can strike the hearing until the C-SPAN 1. (The hearing aired on C-Span 3.)
“Farms of America today are too dependent on immigrant labor to pick our fruits and vegetables,” he continued in his characteristic deadpan. “Now, the obvious answer to all of us to stop eating fruits and vegetables. And if you look at recent statistics obesity, many Americans have already begun.”
Colbert also said: “This is America, I do not want to take on Mexican tomatoes I want to take on the U.S., and then sliced and served on the Guatemalan Venezuelan ..
in a sanatorium, where the Chilean gives me a Brazilian. ”
Not all were entertained. Before Colbert showed Rep. John Conyers, D-Mich., “Said the comedian must submit written testimony and leave. Colbert said that he was invited Lofgren and will go if she wanted him to. Conyers relented.
Republican Congressman Jason Chaffetz in Utah, which was twice the exhibition of Colbert and lost “leg wrestling” matches comedian, also rejected. “I’m on the subcommittee, but it was a joke,” he posted on Twitter. “He’s the best fake speaker, so that if the Democrats want a fake rumor, I guess he is the right guy.”
Lofgren, an expert immigration and promote migrant farm workers, was “interviewed” by Colbert on his Comedy Central show this week on a farm in New York. Colbert introduced a longtime South Bay congressman as “the famous Mexican Hugger”, and then asked her, while nodding in a haystack behind them: “If I want to be a migrant worker farm, we must make the child anchor
The representative Lofgren rejected criticism that she was trivializing the work of Congress, saying some journalists would show up at the hearing, if Colbert was not there. In its own way, Colbert was to draw attention to a serious problem, said a spokesman, Pedro Ribeiro.
