Salmonella Symptoms

Several people have already contracted Salmonella in California and Minnesota and CDC investigators have traced the source to common restaurants who were using tainted eggs. The Iowa egg company that produced the eggs, Wright County Egg, has voluntarily issued a major recall of its products.

The problem in this particular case is that the eggs are distributed throughout the entire country and are sold under various brand names. The brands that are affected include Lucerne, Albertson, Mountain Dairy, Ralph's, Boomsma's, Sunshine, Hillandale, Trafficanda, Farm Fresh, Shoreland, Lund, Dutch Farms and Kemp.

That list represents a fairly significant portion of the eggs that are available in grocery stores and food sellers throughout the United States. As a result, CDC and FDA officials are currently investigating and inspecting the barn and facilities at Wright County Egg.

The recall was prompted by a spike in June and July in salmonella cases, with nearly four times the normal amount being reported. That apparently prompted Wright County Egg to look more closely at its operation and eventually federal investigators were brought in.

At this point, there is no word on whether or not individual grocery stores are going to be pulling the listed brands from the shelves. The most common symptoms of salmonella are diarrhea, abdominal cramps and fever. Symptoms usually manifest themselves within 8 to 72 hours of ingesting the tainted food.
