Cake Boss Arrested Due to Sexual Assault

Remy Gonzalez, brother-in-law of Cake Boss Buddy Valastro, was arrested on Aug. 18 on charges of aggravated sexual assault, criminal sexual assault, criminal sexual contact and endangering the welfare of a child. MSNBC reports  that none of the sexual assault charges had anything to do with the child; since the child was underage and in the house at the time of the alleged crimes, that charge was added.

Gonzalez, a Hoboken resident, is a supporting cast member of the TLC show and Carlo’s City Hall Bake Shop “top decorator,” according to show’s site. A law enforcement official said he was “arrested on the 18th and held on $300,000 bail. He went to Superior Court on the 20th, and they kept the bail the same. He couldn’t make it so he’s staying in jail.”

If Gonzalez is found guilty of all counts, he could face more than 20 years in jail. He is expected to appear back in court in Morris County on Sept. 7.

You can find out more information about Cake Boss, which is in its third season, on the TLC website – but Gonzalez’ bio has been taken down from the site, and the only mentions of him are in his wife’s bio. Desserts seem to be all the rage on cable right now; similar shows include Cupcake Wars and Ace of Cakes. There will even be a pastry version of Top Chef coming to Bravo.

“We support Buddy and the Valastro family during this very difficult and challenging time,” TLC said in a statement. “The network respects the family’s wish for as much privacy as possible, and as this doesn’t involve us, we will not be commenting any further.”

Remy Gonzalez of Cake Boss was arrested on charges of of sexually assaulting a teenager. Remy Gonzalez, 32, is the brother-in-law of “Cake Boss” Buddy Valastro of the TLC channel TV show based on Carlos Bakery in Hoboken, NJ. Will the arrest of cake decorator Remy Gonzalez burn the Cake Boss' reputation?

The Charges Against Remy Gonzalez

On August 17, Remy Gonazalez was arrested for committing assaults in March. The assaults allegedly happened at Florham Park and East Hanover. Gonzalez is chargedd in both town with first and third degree aggravated sexual assault, second degree sex assault, third degree endangering and fourth degree criminal sexual contact. Right now Gonazels is being held in Morris County jail. Bail is set at $300,000.

Witnesses to the Remy Gonzalez Assaults

According to NJ.com, the Morris County Prosecutor's Office met with two witnesses on August 17. Both claim the victim was sexually assaulted by Gonzalez. Their identities have not been disclosed.

The witnesses claim they confronted Gonzalez about the assult on August 13 and he denied it. Later in the day, the witnesses said they would bring the teen to a doctor and police would be contacted if anything was found. According to an affidavit, at that point Gonzalez “began to cry and admitted that he had engaged in acts.”

The Victim of the Assaults

On August 17, the unidentified victim indicated incidents happened one in Florham Park and once in East Hanover. The teen was told by Gonzalez not to tell anyone what happened, according to an affidavit filed.

The witnesses recorded an August 17 phone call with Gonazalez. During the call, he acknowledged he previously admitted to assaulting the teen. On the 17th, he indicated he only touched the teens private areas and he “made a mistake” and wanted to “get help” and forget about it.

What Does Gonzalez Say About the Alleged Assaults

When the police contacted Remy Gonzalez, he made no statement and exercised his right to retain a lawyer. Brother-in-law Gonzalez appeared as a cake decorator on “Cake Boss.”

What Does TLCSay?

According to the Daily Mail, a spokesperson from TLC stated, “We support Buddy and the Valastro family during this very difficult and challenging time. The network respects the family's wish for as much privacy as possible, and as this doesn't involve us, we will not be commenting any further.'

What About the Cake Boss?

The TLC website stated about Buddy the Cake Boss, that he is looking “to achieve his late father's dream of making Carlo's Bake Shop a household name with or without the help of his family.” Wikipedia reports the Cake Boss reality television show on TLC premiered on April 19, 2009. Season three premiered on May 31, 2010.

While Buddy continues to make beautiful cakes with his retired mother, four sisters and remaining two brothers-in-law, will the actions of Gonzalez put a damper on this thriving business? Entertainment and luxury food businesses are already suffering during a tight economy. It seems with or without the help of family, Buddy will have to work double-time to get past this negative publicity.
