While the 9 / 11 families do not speak as a bloc, Debra Burlingame, whose brother was one of the pilots slain that day, and who speaks for many of the victims’ families, claims President Obama puts the proposed mosque at Ground Zero ahead of The 9 / 11 trial.
“I think the president absolutely has its] priorities [in the war,” Debra Burlingame on 9 / 11 Families for a safe and strong America, told Fox. “He should concentrate on the implementation of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and his cronies on trial and making them plead guilty when they said they wanted to do, instead of lecturing the families of firefighters and their children on religious tolerance at ground zero.”
A spokesman for the White House said the policy was not a factor in the president’s comments on the proposed mosque near Ground Zero. Assistant Secretary of the White House press Bill Burton said the president felt obliged to ensure that all Americans are treated fairly, regardless of their religious beliefs.
After strong opposition from New Yorkers and the mayor of the city, the White House went to the Ministry of Justice’s decision in November to 9 / 11 conspirators to send in federal court in Lower Manhattan to review. In March, Attorney General Eric Holder told the Congress a final decision on the trial site was imminent – “weeks.” But earlier this summer, Fox News confirmed that a public announcement of the administration were not expected until after the midterm elections.
During one of his last press conference before Congress to break, Holder said no decision with respect to, uh, when the tests will take place, but uh the conversations we have with are ongoing. ” Holder added, “And the political thing that you mentioned, the fact of the elections, is not part of the talks at all.”
Nearly nine years after the attacks, none of the five suspects in U.S. military custody is responsible for 9 / 11 conspiracy and there is no fixed date for when a public authority decides on the location will be announced.
Not all of the 9 / 11 families against the mosque. But the White House weighing in on the debate, Burlingame said that it seemed an attempt to silence the families expressed some are opposed.
“I would say that is an absolute stooge and it is honestly used to intimidate us to establish calm,” said Burlingame. “We talk now Ground Zero, and we do not intend to be quiet in any way.”
