Cinemas in Singapore

Yesterday I Almost Puked While Watching A Movie In Singapore.

The reason was my confused brain after I had finally decided to give the new re-discovered 3D-Movies a try and watch “My Bloody Valentine” in fabulous, and very shaky, 3D pictures.

And while sitting there and seeing blood and ripped out hearts flying around me, enjoying myself and the sweet popcorn, I remembered how I first arrived in Singapore and short after had a terrible introduction to the cinema experience in Singapore.
Enjoy your movie in Singapore to the fullest, read here where!

1. Golden Village – Vivo City

The Golden Village franchise cinemas are in general all of a very high standard, including newest sound and projector technology, mostly clean theater rooms, convenient Internet booking and seat reservation etc.

The Golden Village cinemas at Vivo City offer you the great convenience to spend a day shopping or relaxing on Sentosa and coming back letting you watch a nice cinema in a very relaxing atmosphere.

      Almost always very good, shows 3D movies, some cinemas have full digital screenings, some smaller rooms have the “normal” technology, sound could be a bit louder sometimes

2. Golden Village – Plaza Singapura

If you want to have a nice dinner and combine it with a very convenient location (Dauhby Gaut MRT) and a relaxing movie to finish the day of, then I can recommend the Golden Village cinema in the Plaza Singapura Mall.

Situated on the top level, you have all the usual amenities, and if your show is sold out already, you always have the option to walk over to the Cathay (below) and check their screenings.

3. The Cathay – Cathay (Dauhby Gaut MRT)

A mere 5 minute walk from the MRT station or Plaza Singapura “The Cathay” is the other big franchise cinema line in Singapore. Their “Flagship” cinema is in the “Cathay” building and was the first to offer 3D movies in Singapore.

If you have to wait for your movie to start, just have a nice snack in the food court in the basement or play a round of PC games on the same level as the cinema.

However, their rooms are usually more freezer then cinema. Bring a winter jacket if you come here.

4. Shaw Lido Complex (Room 1) – Shaw Center

One of the oldest established cinemas right in the heart of Singapore. Directly on Orchard road and once founded by the “Shaw Brothers” this is the place to go for some nostalgia.

Old original movie posters along the walls of the Lido and ticket counters as old school as some of the cinema rooms.

I put “Room 1″ in the header because I can only recommend “Room 1″. Its the largest cinema room in Singapore and plays the movies in High Definition, full digitalized quality. Very impressive.

    * Webpage:
      www.shaw.sg
    * Online booking:
      Yes (here)
    * Ticket Weekday:
      7 $ (+0.5 $ Booking Fee)
    * Ticket Weekend:
      8 $ (+0.5 $ Booking Fee)
    * Clean:
      I would say its enough, general clean, but you might find some old Popcorn on your seat
    * Movie Quality (Technology / Sound):
      Offers 3D movies, biggest cinema room in Singapore, some rooms very old technology, Room 1 full digitalized

5. Alliance Francais

The Alliance Francais is a French cultural center in Singapore, situated near Newton MRT (5 minutes walking distance) it is the only place where you will find old and new French movies, shown in French with English subtitles the whole year.

The environment is more of a cultural arty one, then the latest cinema dome. Definitely worth a visit and a must for every French movie lover.

    * Webpage:
      www.alliancefrancaise.org.sg
    * Online booking:
      Yes (here)
    * Ticket Weekday:
      8.20 $
    * Ticket Weekend:
      8.20 $
    * Clean:
      Yes, simple location, but everything fine
    * Movie Quality (Technology / Sound):
      This cinema is not about the movie quality but the gathering and experience. Enjoy the movie, the company and the environment, not the latest technology.

6. Screening Room – China Town

The Screening Room is thought as a fusion of bar / restaurent with cinema touch. Situated near Club Street in China Town its a wonderful place for a nice cocktail on the rooftop bar and a private (you can rent their screening room) or public show of a timeless movie.
Its a very nice concept that works very well and keeps a personal touch through small location and well executed concept ideas.

    * Webpage:
      www.screeningroom.com.sg
    * Online booking:
      No (Reservations through: 6221-1694 or by email to info@screeningroom.com.sg)
    * Ticket Weekday:
      20 $
    * Ticket Weekend:
      20 $
    * Clean:
      Clean as a bar can be!
    * Movie Quality (Technology / Sound):
      Its about the combination of wonderful bar and restaurent layout with the possibility to sit down and have your cocktail while watching one of the timeless masterpieces with your friends. Dont expect the latest technology, but a lot of fun and a wonderful evening.

7. Gold Class – Golden Village

The golden ultimate cinema experience. Expect to pay 35 $ and more for a single ticket, but find yourself in a cinema with not more then 20 guests, each resting in a business class lounge style chair, fully convertible into a nice and comfortable bed.

You get your popcorn and drinks, meals and cokctails personally delivered to your seat and blankets to keep you warm (which is more then important especially in Singapore) are included as well. Be king for a night.

      Perfect, your seat comes with a butler and free blankets, what more do you want
